Born in 1928, Sheikh Tantawi has been a leading spiritual authority for Sunni Muslims and an accomplished faculty member at Ausol Aldeen, The Islamic University of Libya, and the Islamic University of Madinha. He was appointed the Grand Mufti of Egypt in 1986. He served in that post for 10 years and then became the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque and Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 1996.
