Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah
Shia Muslim
A spiritual leader of Shiite Muslims, Sheikh Fadlallah was born in 1935 in Najaf, Iraq and moved to Lebanon in 1966. A religious scholar from a young age, Fadlallah came to be known for his public sermons and specialized as a cleric in religious law. In the 1980s he gained popularity within Hezbollah (the "Party of God"). He was surrounded by controversy when he showed support for the American Embassy bombing in 1983 and discouraged American activity in the Middle East, but more recently he has spoken out against the 9/11 attacks and other suicide bombings. The Grand Ayatollah lives in Beirut and gives a weekly Friday sermon with upwards of 20,000 attendees.
